bwsilver (by hahawtf)
This is my attempt at making a collage background using a magazine page,
à la this tutorial by Katie Kendrick on the
Create Mixed Media website. I don’t have quite the supplies she does, so I had to make do. Here’s what I did:
- lay magazine page over some textured surfaces and use fine grit sandpaper to lightly sand away relief patterns. I used a piece of screen, embossed card stock and the swirly pattern on the top of a pencil box.
- wad the magazine page into a ball; open the page out again and rub black (permanent) ink pad lightly all over.
- glue magazine page to substrate. I used a backing board from a stack of scrapbook paper and a gluestick and rolled the page out completely using a brayer.
- brush on metallic silver acrylic paint; rub all over with a scrap piece of cotton fabric to take away some of the paint.
- brush white paint on randomly using a rough bristle brush.
- stamp paint on with various things - the piece of screen from earlier, wine corks, embossed card stock, rubberstamps.
- layer on text patterned tissue paper.
- drip paint. I dripped big blobs (of black paint mixed with some pearlizing medium) and then spritzed them with water and let them run/blew them around with a straw.
- stamp on some more paint.
- cover in a layer of Mod Podge; apply packing tape transfer images. I used stamped images from a magazine.
This was mostly done over the course of an afternoon. I let it dry/flatten under some books off and on between layers & overnight. I thought the Mod Podge/packing tape transfers were going to be the end of layering, but I went back and stamped with my hand carved star stamp (outlining a few with permanent marker) and ran a silver paint pen around the edges. I think I’m done now though ;P
First time mail sent to Gina in CA. It’s an altered DVD & case combo, with some added goodies. It made it across the country without a hitch, so I’m looking forward to doing more!

A little collage + a little doodling.

Scrappy ATC’s - made from miscellaneous bits of papers collecting in my stash. If it’s even remotely interesting, I will save it, no matter how tiny the scrap.
cling wrap marbling (by hahawtf)
Finished cling wrap “marbling” pieces.
Inspired by Karen’s marbled paper tutorial, but lacking the supplies to actually follow through with said tutorial, I tried some plastic cling wrap experimenting yesterday. Pictured is my third attempt (coulda swore I took pics of the first one) so the result is a little more mixed. Crumple up a piece of cling wrap, drizzle it with some watered down acrylic, flatten the piece of wrap back out again and drop a piece of cardboard down on top of it. Smoosh down where needed then pull the piece of cardboard away from the wrap. Ta-da, you got a neat tie-dye, marble smattering paint effect.
After this dried, I went back in and did more paint washes, splattering and stamping. I’ll share the finished ones later.

This is what’s been occupying my workspace for the past week or so. A printer’s/memory tray thingie in a Florida theme for my mom. Just need one more piece to add to it and it’ll be totally done.
I needed to make another batch of postcards, but wanted to try something a little different from the random scrap collages I’ve been doing. I decided to do something with more paint than collage. And I was good this time and documented most of the process!
Step 1: Gather up supplies. I started with a large 12”x16” sheet of cold press watercolor paper. I scored it into eight 4”x6” quadrants to help guide me later on when piling on the layers. Then I picked out some acrylic paint - lime green, bahama blue, royal fuchsia, bright orange & banana. No, I am not loyal to any one brand of acrylic paint; I get whatever is on sale or looks good. I also gathered up the tools I was going to use to apply the paint (brushes, bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard, rubber stamps, plastic grocery bag, spray bottle of water for spreading out drips) and cut up some bits of scrap book paper in colors similar to the paints I chose.
Steps 2-7: Paint and paper go on. I went from lightest to darkest starting with the yellow and stuck on some of the paper pieces between the yellow and orange layers. I used the score marks to make sure each rectangle got at least a couple pieces of the papers.
Step 8: Mod Podge! I don’t usually seal my postcards in any way, but I wanted a glossy look to the paint for these.
Last step: Cut ‘em up! They’ll flatten out a bit more over the next couple of days, but I think I’m going to cover the backs with a patterned paper before I address them.
ETA: I DID end up covering the backs - with a patterned wrapping paper - which helped flatten the cards out more. I also scrubbed down the painted sides with an unused dryer sheet, which took a lot of the stickiness off of the Mod Podge.

Large (6¾”x10½”) mixed media collage postcard. Sending this bit of sunshine up Massachusetts way.
